AI Showdown: Which Generative AI Tool Should You Use Right Now?

It is time to start using generative AI models if you have not already begun to do so. While generative AI is in its infancy, several AI tools are sufficiently powerful and easy to use that nearly all professionals can and should use an AI tool to save time and reduce routine work. As a testament to the growth of generative AI, ChatGPT gained 100 million users in 2 months after introduction. It took Instagram, which was one of the fastest growing services in history, a now glacial 2.5 years to reach 100M users.

  • In our research and consulting practice, we use AI on a daily basis. As long as you understand AI’s limits and biases (and potential for authoritative hallucinations), it can eliminate a substantial amount of routine work. A few examples include (these draw heavily on our work in knowledge industries):
  • Drafting preliminary content
  • Copy editing
  • Preliminary market research
  • Preliminary framework design
  • Routine data analysis
  • Early stage idea generation
  • Image creation
  • Code creation

The through line is that AI is a great accelerant but not to be relied on for accuracy or for finishing work. But which tool should you use today?

The attached table is a comparison guide of popular generative AI tools (produced by a Tuscany case team as of May 1, 2023 – keep in mind that these tools are evolving quickly).

The bottom line: Use ChatGPT for now.

ChatGPT Plus is currently the best tool for professionals especially those involved in knowledge work. Keep in mind that there are also a variety of generative AI tools that excel in specific tasks (e.g. DALL-E for image generation and Copilot for code generation) offering a more tailored solution for specialized work.
